Lexington received some good news last year when their annual point-in-time count, LexCount, reported that the number of people experiencing homelessness decreased by at least 12.5%. Overall, “the Count found 689 people in Lexington are experiencing homelessness, including 603 people living in emergency shelters, 55 in transitional housing, and 31 unsheltered.” While progress has been made in recent years, there still remain individuals and families who are indigent.

In order to further reduce these numbers and assist those who truly need it, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was created. This devoted organization was founded in Paris in 1833 as “a network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.” Now, they service countless communities across the globe. Thankfully, Lexington has its very own St. Vincent de Paul by a partnership with Good Shepherd Catholic Church. They serve “those who are indigent and need food, clothing, furniture and/or financial assistance. St. Vincent de Paul operates a food bank and thrift store from its own facilities on Wallace Ave.”

Here at Summit Insurance, we are humbled by the good work that St. Vincent de Paul is doing and we are passionate about playing our part in fulfilling their mission of giving back to our community.
